What this article helps with: Connecting Clio to Hona for the first time using OAuth authorization. After setup, your integration will show as Connected, Inactive — this is expected and explained below. Also covers how to reconnect if your Clio authorization lapses.

Who this is for: Firm admins with Clio admin access and Hona admin access.

When not to use this article: If Clio is already connected but data isn't syncing correctly, see Integrations: What is Syncing? and Clio and Hona Mapping.

Step 1: Sign into Clio

Open Clio in a new web browser and sign in with your admin access credentials.

Step 2: Sign into Hona

In a new web browser tab, open Hona by navigating to app.hona.com and sign in with your admin access credentials.

  • In the top-left corner, click on the dropdown menu and select "Company Settings"

  • Click on the "Integrations" tab at the top of your Company Settings page.

Step 3: Connect your Integration

  • In the Integrations section, locate the Clio integration tile and select the "Connect" button.

  • You will be redirected to a Clio authorization page. Click "Allow Access" to proceed.

Step 4: Confirmation of Integration

After allowing access, you will be redirected back to Hona.

  • Verify that the Clio integration tile now displays "Connected, Inactive."

What does "Connected, Inactive" mean?

"Connected, Inactive" means the OAuth authorization between Clio and Hona is established, but automatic nightly syncs are not yet running. This is expected — it does not mean something went wrong.

In this state:

  • Hona can access your Clio data, but it will not automatically sync until your integration is set to Active

  • You can test data by using the manual sync option on individual projects in Hona

  • No automated notifications or updates will be sent to clients yet

When you are ready to go live, contact your Hona onboarding or account manager and they will activate the integration. Once Active, nightly syncs will begin running automatically.

Step 5: Next Steps

  • Configure your field mapping so Hona knows how to read your Clio data. See Clio and Hona Mapping.

  • When ready to go live, reach out to your Customer Success Manager or Onboarding Manager to activate your integration.

Reconnecting Clio

If your Clio integration disconnects after initial setup — for example, if the OAuth authorization lapses or is revoked — you can reconnect by following the same steps above. Navigate to Company Settings → Integrations → Clio tile → click Reconnect and complete the Clio authorization flow again.

Symptoms of a disconnected Clio integration: sync stops working for all cases, integration tile may show as disconnected or unauthorized, data stops updating in Hona.

If reconnection fails or the integration does not resume syncing after reauthorization, contact [email protected].
