For Clients: How to Receive Your Settlement Payment

A plain-language guide for clients receiving a settlement payment from their law firm: the secure link, the verification code, choosing how to get paid, and who to call for help.

Written by Josh Christensen

Note for firm staff: this article is written for your clients, not for your team. Send them the link when you send a disbursement, include it in your settlement paperwork, or point to it when someone calls asking what to expect.

What is happening

Your case is finished. Once your documents are signed and the funds have cleared, your law firm sends your money to you electronically instead of mailing a check.

You will get a secure payment link from your firm. You choose how you want to be paid, and you enter your own bank or card details on a secure page. Nobody at your firm sees or types your account numbers.

The payments are handled by Confido Legal, your firm's payment partner.

Three steps to get your money

1. Receive your link

Your firm texts you a secure payment link. It arrives in the same text conversation you have been having with them, from the same phone number. If your firm has your email instead, it comes by email.

2. Unlock your payment

Open the link and enter your phone number or your email address. You will be sent a one-time code. Type the code in to continue.

Important: the code comes from a different phone number than your firm's. That is normal and it is not spam. The code is what keeps anyone else from claiming your money.

3. Choose how to get paid

You will see your payment amount and two choices.

Cost to you

What you enter

Instant to your debit card

Usually seconds, sometimes a few minutes

A 1% fee, never more than $95

Your Visa, Mastercard, or Discover debit card

Direct deposit

4 to 6 business days

Your bank sign-in, or your routing and account number

You are never required to pay anything to get your money. Direct deposit is always free. The fee only applies if you choose to have the money in minutes instead of days.

For example, on a $5,000 payment the instant fee is $50. On a $50,000 payment it is $95, not $500, because the fee stops at $95.

Check your details before you submit

Your money goes to whatever account or card you enter. Please take a moment to make sure it is right.

  • Signing in to your bank is safer than typing numbers. If your bank is on the list, use the sign-in option. There is nothing to mistype.

  • Double-check every digit if you enter your routing and account number by hand. One wrong number means the payment fails and your firm has to start over, which delays you by days.

  • Use an account or card in your own name. Payments to an account in somebody else's name are usually blocked, including a spouse's or a family member's. If your situation is different, talk to your firm before you submit.

If something does go wrong, your money is not lost. A failed payment simply does not go through, and your firm can send you a new link.

Common questions

Is this real? It looks like a scam.

It is real, and there are a few things you can check. The link comes from the same phone number your firm has been texting you from, in the same conversation. You also have to prove it is you with a one-time code before anything happens, so a link on its own is not enough for someone else to take your money.

If you are still unsure, call your law firm on the number you already know and ask them to confirm they sent it. That is always a reasonable thing to do.

Do I have to pay to get my money?

No. Direct deposit is free and it is always available. The only fee is if you choose the instant option to get your money in minutes rather than in a few business days, and that choice is yours.

I do not have a bank account.

A prepaid debit card works, as long as it is a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. You can buy one, load your payment onto it, and use it like any other card. If that will not work for you, talk to your law firm about other options.

I entered the wrong account number. What happens now?

The payment fails and the money stays with your firm. Nothing is lost. Call Confido Legal at (866) 569-9725 or contact your firm, and they will send you a new link so you can try again.

Can the money go to my spouse's or my parent's account?

Usually not. The name on the account or card normally has to match your name, which is there to stop anyone else from taking your payment. If there is a genuine reason it needs to go somewhere else, for example a guardian handling money for a minor, talk to your law firm before you submit anything and they will sort it out.

How long do I have to claim my payment?

Normally 60 days, though your firm can set a different window. If your link stops working before you have used it, contact your firm and they will send a new one.

How will I know the payment worked?

You will see a confirmation on the screen when you finish, and you will get a message once the payment completes. If you chose the instant option, check your card in a few minutes. If you chose direct deposit, allow 4 to 6 business days before worrying, then call Confido on (866) 569-9725.

Can I still get a paper check?

There is no check option on the payment page. If you would really rather have a check, reply to your firm's text message and ask them. They will handle it their usual way.

In short

Watch for a text from your firm, enter the code they send you, pick free direct deposit or pay a small fee to have it in minutes, and check your account details carefully before you submit. If you get stuck, (866) 569-9725 is the number to call.
